Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who can join scouts?
A: Scouting Ireland is a multi-denominational, co-educational, youth
based association with a membership close to 40,000 across the island of
Ireland. It is open to all children aged 6 to 15 years, regardless of
race, religion or nationality.
Q: When can my child join?
A: To join Beavers, Cubs, or Scouts, please contact the relevant section
leader. A leader will help you with the necessary paperwork and
your child may join in the activities immediately.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: There is a weekly charge of €5 for each child (family discounts can
be negotiated). This covers materials, and badges etc. A uniform must be
purchased after about 3 months of membership, and there is an annual
registration fee.
Q: What if my child loses something?
A: The first issue of the group scarf and any badge is free; if any item
is lost, it can be replaced, but at a cost! The group scarf is €5.99 and
badges are between €1 and €1.50. Note that badges can only be replaced
if the cub was awarded it and has mislaid the original badge.
Also please ensure your childs uniform and all their belongings are
labelled.
Q: Where do I put all these badges?
A: The scout badges are explained
here . And the
cubs diagram is here. If in doubt, please ask a
leader.
Q: When will my child get their scarf and
uniform?
A: The uniform can be purchased at any time from the
Scouting Shop, but
please wait a couple of months to ensure your child will like scouting.
Cubs may use any navy round neck sweat shirt and the scouting logos may
be purchased at the den. The scarf or neckie will be awarded to your
child at the Investiture Ceremony.
Q: Can I be a leader?
A: There is always a need for new leaders in Scouts. Anyone wishing to be considered can contact the
Group Leader,
or ask at a meeting. All leaders must get Garda Clearance, and full
training will be given free of charge.
